Rolex Double Ref James Bond Submariner

Model No.: 6536/6538 Circa 1958

A batch of Rolex Submariners Ref 6538 Big Crowns Cases were used for the Rolex Submariners Small Crowns Ref 6536. Why? As usual we can only speculate as to why Rolex did this, any where from a Special Order or they just ran out of Small Crown cases. Nevertheless the outcome has produced an extremely rare hybrid model, a small crown Rolex Submariner ref 6536 with a large size case.

As one can see from the scans below, the serial numbers have been crossed out and replaced, the last digit of the reference number has been slashed and a 6 has been added making the ref 6538/6.

The fabulous rare gloss black dial with gilt printing has the depth in silver gilt, with match gilt hands. Please note that this dial is infact very rare and speciallly made for this hybrid model as it will not fit in the normal small crown Rolex Submariner Ref 6536-1 and Ref 6536.

This is the 4th such example I have come across in 10 years, the serial numbers have been just a few numbers apart. This tells me that they are all part of one batch.

In like NOS condition and very sought after by the serious collector. This is an important Rolex Submariner.

Rolex Big Crown Submariner with 369 Explorer Dial

Model No.: 6200 Circa 1953 First Model

This has to be one the mintiest Rolex Submariner ref 6200 that has surfaced. The watch case has never been polished, all the curves and angles (just as on a beautiful woman) are there. The original bezel is near mint.

Superb gloss black 369 Explorer Dial with mint gilt printing and all perfect luminous markers.

Also comes with its original Rolex oyster expanding bracelet.

Although officially launched around 1955 the ref. 6200 used the old style bubble back cal.A296/775 movement measuring 10 1/2 lignes and the old ungraduated bezel, and a Large Brevet winder.

It seems to have been an experimental model being produced in low numbers with two dial designs for this model, a 369 gloss explorer style but the early dial lacked the word 'Submariner'. This was because Rolex had not decided a name for their new born baby.

For commercial reasons they opted to hold back the ref. 6200 in favour of the Submariner ref. 6204 which had a slimmer case and a smaller winder. They concluded that the world was not ready for a thick cased large winder Rolex Submariner.
